Adolescents

I believe that counselling has a positive impact for adolescents who face many pressures in the transition from childhood to adulthood. Exam pressure, relationships, being part of a peer group and establishing their personal identity can all cause stress and anxiety. Counselling offers a safe, empathic, non-judgemental space which allows the young person to build on their self-esteem and ability to handle problems as they gain a sense of being valued and understood.

Counselling may seem like a daunting process but in addition to simply talking, young people are also encouraged to express themselves creatively with the use of different medium such as art materials, symbolic figures, shells and stones. I also use a variety of motivational exercises based on CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) techniques to help build on their self-esteem. This motivational approach helps young people to challenge their negative thoughts and feelings to develop more positive thinking patterns and coping mechanisms. The aim is for the young person to develop the tools and resources they need for making changes to overcome their difficulties and to find a way to move forward.
